Adult lice and what you can do about it
Head lice are commonly thought of as gross little critters that lurk on school children's heads, but adults can get them too. A study of 1,000 UK children under the age of 16 carried out for the lice removal product NYDA had shown that 16 per cent of parents surveyed had caught head lice from their children.
According to the NHS choices site, at some point during the year, an estimated one in three children will have a head lice infestation, so that's quite a few adults potentially affected.

According to the NHS choices site, at some point during the year, an estimated one in three children will have a head lice infestation, so that's quite a few adults potentially affected.
But there are different ways you can get rid of them, and at different prices:
- Hair conditioning followed by combing: this can cost as little as £3.27, hair conditioners can cost as little as £1.00 and metal nit combs as little as £2.27.
- Lice lotions/ shampoos: these can cost anything between £4.45 and £17.99. Lotions and shampoos kill the lice, but the eggs often survive, so a nit comb is usually necessary.
- Lice removal services: The Hairforce Lice Assassins run in-store services in Edgware, Primrose Hill and Wandsworth, as well as home services, to remove head lice from child and adult customers. Lice removal is done by hand, using tools such as lice-hoovers and nit-dehydrators. Prices will vary by case, but an in-store one-and-a-half hour initial clear-up typically costs £100 and the half-hour follow-up a week later costs £50.
